As one of the most popular destinations in the Spanish Canary Islands, Lanzarote is home to the world famous Timanfaya National Park, location of the Montanas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire). Other sights favoured by tourists on the island include Jameos del Agua, a volcanic formation which now encases a restaurant, the Agricola Museum, the Cueva de los Verdes cave system, and the lookout at Mirador del Rio. Hacha Grande (a large mountain) and Papagayo Beach are also popular. The other main attraction of Lanzarote (and indeed the other Canary Islands) is the beautiful beaches that are scattered around the coast. With a dry, sunny climate that stays with the island year round, Lanzarote is an ideal location for water-sports such as swimming, sailing and diving. Sun-bathing and walking are also incredibly popular. The towns of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Arrecife are amongst the larger urban areas that contain holiday resorts and hotels.
There are a few different ways to get to Lanzarote from both international and regional locations. Frequent ferry services travel to Lanzarote from Corralejo, Puerto del Rosario and Gran Caneria. The harbours around the island are also open to private water-craft and cruise-ships. The main port of entry, however, is the island's sole airport, Lanzarote Airport (sometimes referred to as Arrecife, for the town it is closest too). A large number of airlines use the facilities including First Choice Airways, easyJet, bmi and Jet2.com. Car hire is available from both the airport, the ferry ports and the major towns on Lanzarote, with Avis, Auto Reisen, Cicar, Hertz and Europcar amongst the rental companies operating within the region. |
